While Sparrows Point High School is a comprehensive high school with a population of 985, the SPECIES (Sparrows Point Educational Center in Environmental Studies) magnet comprises about 400 of those students. Because Sparrows Point High School is located on the Chesapeake Bay, the SPECIES Magnet students engage not only in a rigorous classroom course load (with an emphasis on aquatic and environmental sciences) , but also a wide-range of authentic, hands-on activities including stream studies, canoeing, and improving the health of the Chesapeake Bay. SPECIES Magnet students are also offered a variety of college credits throughout their magnet enrollment; this support their college completer pathway.
